P5 Health Ventures Weekly Newsletter – 01.05.2018

written by David Eigen January 6, 2018

Welcome to our first edition of the P5 Health Ventures Weekly Newsletter, internally known as What We Think is Interesting (this day, week, month…). Every day, we are at the forefront of the rapid evolution of the practice and delivery of medicine, and consistent with our podcast, P5 Protocols, we will be bringing you access to interesting information and (what we hope may be) jumping off points in your own path through the healthcare and venture industry.  So, whether you are a practitioner, patient, healthcare entrepreneur or business person, we believe each week, in rapidly digestible format, we will be able to provide something for each of you. We would appreciate constructive feedback for ways to improve it. And with that, here is our first newsletter.

Quote: On health and just about everything else in your life – and this one is on David’s wall for the past decade plus.  Sounds like prevention to me!  It is from Lao Tzu and in the Tao Te Ching.  Chapter 64.  It starts:

“Handle what is going to be tough when it is still smooth.  Control what has not yet formed its force.  Fragile things are easy to shatter.  Tiny things are easy to scatter….”

P5 Protocols Podcast of the Week: This week we had Alison Gannett, world champion extreme skier – you know, the kind of person that looks like she is fearlessly floating down a mountain side with an avalanche four feet behind her.  And I’m (David) scared to drive in icy conditions today!  Here’s the catch that makes the skiing seem like childplay: she is already a five year survivor of brain cancer and has a program to work with clients in conjunction with their doctors and preferably integrative oncologists.  She only had ONE (1) surgery.  The best numbers I could find were that average survival for that is closer to 5 months (6.8 to be exact) versus 5 years.  And for many years now, she has had no traces of cancer in her body! So here is Alison Gannett, a stud of all studs!

Questions We Need Help Answering:For Entrepreneurs: Why do you ask us to invest in convertible debt with a cap that is much higher than your company is currently worth?  Why would we help you drive up the valuation to the cap?  And while we’re at it, why is every Silicon Valley startup using a $5 million cap?  And while we’re at that, why are so many angels and VC’s accepting it?  For Entrepreneurs that have a logic or other angels or VC’s who have thoughts, please email us your thoughts.  We will soon open this up to a formal dialogue.

For Patients & Providers: For so many, in your daily lives, you seek out so many details and leave no stone unturned – even for the most mundane thing. However, when it comes to illness, especially serious illness, why do so many patients turn over their lives to one expert and why do you, providers, i.e. the experts, who have limited training, not partner with others to engineer the best POSSIBLE outcome for your patient?  Back in 2011, this happened with David’s dad.  His docs wouldn’t tell him to try anything so he wouldn’t try it. Please email us with any thoughts.

David’s Corner: Every week, I will provide an update on the crazy or not-so-crazy things I am doing to my body, tools I am trying, extra thoughts I am pondering, maybe what I am reading and a really short blurb on why.  And trust me on one thing: for me to be short, it takes A LOT of work.

  1. I am reading The Way of Aikido by George Leonard.  Thank you Tim Ferriss as I found it via your new book, Tribe of Mentors.  Wish I found it 18 years ago when it was first published.  Would have added 50 years to my life, but I’m going to try to make up for it! Here is a link to video of O Sensei, the founder of Aikido.
  2. Go to www.vimeo.com and type in “sheng zhen healing gong”.  Master Junfeng Li is a stud.  Sorry, take that to the next level.  He is beyond a stud. Watch how he moves.  He is a martial arts hero back in China. Perhaps the winningest competition fighter in China’s history who moved on to Sheng Zhen Gong, which is based on love in the universe.  I have been practicing it for over seven years and just getting started!  Next up and extremely similar, Aikido!
