Kathryn Schmitz

Kathryn Schmitz, PhD, MPH, FACSM, is the President Elect at the American College of Sports Medicine as well as Associate Director of Population Sciences at the Penn State Cancer Institute and Chair of the Obesity and Cancer Interest Group for The Obesity Society. Previously, Dr. Schmitz was professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

She is an exercise interventionist who has led multiple trials, including a large randomized controlled trial to assess the safety of upper body exercise among 295 breast cancer survivors with and without lymphedema. Her protocols for exercise in cancer care are already being used by several major institutions and practitioners. Dr. Schmitz holds a BA in Economics from the University of North Carolina, MS Ed., Exercise Physiology from Queens College, Ph.D., in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota, and an MPH from the University of Minnesota.
