P5 Health Ventures Weekly Newsletter – 02.04.2018

written by David Eigen February 4, 2018

Here is more food for thought for the weekend – we hope you are skimming through and reading below, as the theme of the week is an interesting one – the power of healthy skepticism. In the upcoming weeks, we are going to start mentioning companies that are leading the way in the next generation of healthcare delivery.

“Skepticism is the lifeblood of scientific progress. By constantly asking whether there is a different answer, a better approach or an alternative view, scientists drive improvements and innovations that ultimately benefit everyone.”

  • Sue Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (see article below)

“Would that I could discover truth as easily as I can uncover falsehood.”

    • Cicero, De Natura Deora

P5 Protocols Podcast of the Week:

This week, we have two parts:

  • First is a brief discussion of what we think could make a difference sooner than later – as for my close friend’s mother who was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She recently started chemo and they gave her 1.5 years to live. Typed out as a decimal-number, it feels pretty boilerplate, no? We touch on decisions people make and compounding effect of small steps. Compounding!, a topic to be discussed over and over in future podcasts
  • Second, we believe that in this modern era, social media, online ranking systems, twitter feeds for fast news and other tools can and will, together, have a profound impact on how we make those decisions. Now for the challenge – how do we use this information, at our fingertips, to make better, more informed decisions?  Things will change exponentially the next five to ten years.  Let’s take advantage of the good stuff that comes!

Questions We Need Help Answering:

For Entrepreneurs:

  • Is it possible that reaching really far may not be the best strategy for your business model? In other words, there are terms like Nixon’s “War on Cancer” or cancer moonshots. At P5HV, we readily cede these long-term projects because they typically only help in the long-term and many die waiting for the benefits… Imagine if we took smaller steps and had small wins that accumulated in a compounding fashion over years – that were not binary. Remember, when JFK announced a goal of going to the moon before the end of the decade, we had the following factors: 1. Fear of Russia and a loss in a thermonuclear war, 2. One single goal – putting a man on the moon, 3. A true single payer!, and therefore 4. Minimal competing interests and interest groups
  • Without that confluence of factors, do you think shooting for “cancer killers” and the like is the most efficient use of your incremental capital for your startup? The federal government has been at it since Nixon’s war on cancer declaration in 1971. If there are so many people pursuing these endeavors, increasingly in China and elsewhere, are there things you can do to help people now? Especially in prevention of diseases or of their recurrence? Worth five minutes of your time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2dzEDnGqHY

For Patients & Providers:

Have you looked at and processed the endless information on the role of the health of your (or your patients’) mitochondria? See Jason Fung’s piece: Fasting, Longevity and the Mitochondrial Connection

David’s Corner:

Every week, I will provide an update on the crazy or not-so-crazy things I am doing to my body, tools I am trying, extra thoughts I am pondering, maybe what I am reading and a really short blurb on why. And trust me on one thing: for me to be short, it takes A LOT of work

  • GREAT BOOK: Outstanding Health by Michael Galitzer – the need to / for: 1. Cleanse and fortify the mind, 2. Cleanse and renew the body, 3. Super nutrition, 4. Ignite your energy, 5. Regenerate with energy medicine and 6. Hormonal happiness
  • [Another] SHEN ZHENG GONG video: Awakening The Soul (12 minutes)
  • MIND / BODY MEDICINE: I hope to soon have Stephen Porges on our podcast series.  Here is a great 10 minute basic primer on Polyvagal Theory, which explains how trauma can lead to depression, PTSD and other physiological and psychological issues. I am now reading his book, The Polyvagal Theory, straight through vs. previous skimming
  • SEED OR SOIL? Another great piece by Jason Fung on nutrition and cancer.  As Sean would say, the guy is a stud! I love this piece! We suggest you go to Medium and subscribe. As well, you can follow him on Twitter
