P5 Health Ventures Weekly Newsletter – 03.06.18

written by Charlotte Dequeker March 6, 2018

We are excited to share that last Friday we closed our lead investment in figur8!  figur8, based in Boston, and led by founders Nan-Wei Gong and Tim Ren, has developed a true movement intelligence platform that can capture body movement in ways that were previously not possible. Expect us to share much more about figur8 in the coming weeks and months.

This week our team is dividing and conquering.  David will be in Indonesia on a fairly epic, and much needed, scuba trip with friends.  And, in what will likely be the absolute opposite experience from David, Sean will be in Las Vegas for HIMSS, the granddaddy of health tech industry conferences.  A true yin and yang!

“Honestly, I just didn’t care anymore…  I was like, all right, screw it.”

  • Nathan Chen after earning the highest score in the men’s free skate at the Olympics (but after falling several times in the short skate). He landed six quads during that long program and until the short program had been invincible this year on the international circuit. This lesson goes to our kids – all of them. Nathan Chen Gets a Different Kind of Reward: With nothing to lose but pride, the 18-year-old took some risks, and they finally paid off.

Questions We Need Help Answering:

For Providers and Payers: What is your view on the mega-funded startups like Bright Health, Clover Health, and Devoted Health that aim to transform the health insurance experience and the payer-provider relationship? Are they a true ‘threat’?

For Entrepreneurs: Healthcare innovation is notoriously difficult due to factors such as misaligned incentive structures, complicated relationships between multiple stakeholders, and a constantly evolving regulatory environment, amongst others. Given that, how do you think about building something meaningful for the end user vs the (healthcare) ecosystem?

David’s Corner:

The theme of the section is relaxing, and I will keep it brief, so…

Great book I’m reading: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*CK – a Western Zen interpretation for Millennials and Gen Z. We preach ‘energy management’ incessantly here at P5 and the daily practice of knowing what not to devote our energy toward is key to our success… and sanity. It pays inordinate dividends to stop and think before simply doing.

Sean’s Corner:

Kindred Capital, an English VC, is now offering the founders of its portfolio companies a piece of their pie. That is, a percentage of the fund’s carry. This will definitely entice prospective founders but what happens when times get tough and Kindred has to fire one of their founders?

The NYC tech scene is thriving.

Sticking with NYC (health) tech, Nomad Health, just raised a $12M Series B to welcome doctors to the gig economy. Don’t expect this trend to slow down.

Think early stage healthcare is tough? Just ask ex-Twitter CEO Dick Costolo who shut down his fitness startup after only 8 months.
